Modelling Board Engraving with MAGIC-E4

Hello, everyone!

For today’s blog, we’re going to show you how to engrave a dragon pattern on a modelling board with our MAGIC-E4 machine.

In our previous blog, we used a brass plate to create a cut out text bookmark.

This time, we’re going to use a urethane modelling board and engrave a dragon pattern on it.

What is a Urethane Modelling Board?

A urethane modelling board is a type of tooling board or a model board suitable for cutting, engraving or carving designs or patterns by hand or by CNC machines.

Is it possible to engrave any designs on a urethane board with MAGIC-E4?

Absolutely! Redt’s MAGIC-E4 is specially designed to process all types of materials for engraving that come in different forms and sizes including modelling boards.

So how to engrave patterns with MAGIC-E4?

Here are some simple steps you can follow:

(1) Go to MAGIC-Engrave program and load the file or pattern to engrave.

(2) Select a shape template.

Here, we will use a square template for our dragon pattern.

(3) Create a Toolpath.

Select a Toolpath for your design and check whether it is the appropriate toolpath for your design or not.

(4) Set the Toolpath options and click [Start Engraving] button.

Take note: There are two processes involved when engraving on modelling boards with MAGIC-E4: roughing and finishing.

Below are the tools used:

Roughing tool (initial process) Finishing tool (final process)

The initial process is called roughing process.

Here, the end mill tool is used to shape the surface of the material or roughly engrave the design or pattern into the material.

The final process is called the finishing process.

Here, the v-cutter tool is used to refine the surface of the material after the finishing process.

(5) Install the end mill tool to start the roughing process.

Again, the end mill tool is used to engrave the design or pattern into the material.

Be sure to replace the tool with an end mill tool before engraving.

(6) Set the target engraving area on the material.

Use the laser pointer as a guide and make adjustments if necessary.

(7) Press the start button.

The machine automatically measures the height of the material and proceeds to the initial engraving process – roughing.

Once the roughing process is done, the machine automatically stops the engraving process and notifies the user to replace the tool.

Check the notification on the machine’s LCD screen.

(8) Replace the end mill tool with the V-cutter tool.

Again, the V-cutter tool is used to refine the engraved design or pattern for a smooth and improved surface finish.

(9) Press the start button after replacing the tool.

The machine automatically measures the height of the material and proceeds to the final engraving process – finishing.

But wait!!!

Before you begin the finishing process, we highly recommend using our chip collector (CP-261) to get rid of all the debris like chips and dust produced during the engraving process.

Chip Collector (CP-261)

Our Chip Collector (CP-261) efficiently sucks in all chips and dust produced during the engraving process, maintaining a clean and safe working environment for our users.

Tada!

Here is our Final Product!

Let’s try stamping the dragon pattern on clean, white paper!
